ION Glow Tone vs ION Hype XL

Last updated: October 19, 2026

Short answer: the ION Glow Tone. It ranks #68 of 111 boombox speakers by sound quality, rated 3.0/5, at $149. The ION Hype XL ranks #86, rated 2.5/5, at $99, $50 cheaper, which does not close the gap in sound quality.

ION Glow Tone vs ION Hype XL

The ION Glow Tone is the better-sounding pick. Jay’s Straight Up Reviews found it reasonably loud with respectable bass and a classy look, and in a head to head it sounded clearer and less muddy than the Zealot ZE21 with wider coverage from its two side firing drivers. It has a microphone input for karaoke or announcements, which the ION Hype XL lacks. The catch: The Zealot ZE21 played about 6 to 7 dB louder in the same comparison, the Glow Tone loses a little bass at maximum volume and showed a slight rattle near 80 percent, and the battery is rated for only about 10 hours.

The ION Hype XL is the lighter option. A five driver boombox with a 5.25 inch woofer, two 2.75 inch midranges, two 1.5 inch tweeters and two passive radiators, rated at 110W. At 12.1 lbs (5.5 kg) it weighs noticeably less than the ION Glow Tone at 16.1 lbs (7.3 kg). It links with other speakers (Auracast), which the ION Glow Tone cannot. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the ION Glow Tone. Watch for: Its bass is nowhere near as deep as top ranked boomboxes like the Tribit Stormbox Blast and Harman Kardon Go + Play 3, which reach down to about 43 Hz and 35 Hz.

Buy the ION Glow Tone. It is rated higher for sound quality, and saving $50 with the ION Hype XL does not make up for the sound-quality gap.
