The ION Glow Tone is the lighter option. Jay’s Straight Up Reviews found it reasonably loud with respectable bass and a classy look, and in a head to head it sounded clearer and less muddy than the Zealot ZE21 with wider coverage from its two side firing drivers. At 16.1 lbs (7.3 kg) it weighs noticeably less than the ION Tailgater XL at 24.9 lbs (11.3 kg). The tradeoff: The Zealot ZE21 played about 6 to 7 dB louder in the same comparison, the Glow Tone loses a little bass at maximum volume and showed a slight rattle near 80 percent, and the battery is rated for only about 10 hours.
What the ION Tailgater XL does well: A wheeled IPX5 party speaker with a telescoping handle, an 8 inch driver, two tweeters and two side firing 3 inch drivers for wide coverage. The catch: Its bass is nowhere near as deep as top ranked party speakers like the Sony ULT Tower 7 and JBL Partybox 330.
Buy the ION Glow Tone at $149 if you want a boombox speaker. Buy the ION Tailgater XL at $199 if you want a party speaker instead.
