These sit in different size classes, so this is not a straight ranking comparison. The ION Tailgater XL ranks #49 of 50 party speakers by sound quality at $199; the ION Pathfinder 280 ranks #99 of 111 boombox speakers by sound quality at $199.99. Both are rated below 3.0/5 for their class (50 party speakers and 111 boombox speakers), so if sound quality matters, look higher up the rankings.
What the ION Tailgater XL does well: A wheeled IPX5 party speaker with a telescoping handle, an 8 inch driver, two tweeters and two side firing 3 inch drivers for wide coverage. It has a microphone input for karaoke or announcements, which the ION Pathfinder 280 lacks. The catch: Its bass is nowhere near as deep as top ranked party speakers like the Sony ULT Tower 7 and JBL Partybox 330.
What the ION Pathfinder 280 does well: A practical all-day event speaker with an exceptionally long claimed 68-hour battery, wheels, telescoping handle, FM radio, lighting and a full graphic EQ/presets. Watch for: Out of the box, the midrange and treble are uneven enough to sound alternately honky and dull, and the bass does not extend as deeply as better party speakers.
Buy the ION Tailgater XL at $199 for a party speaker, or the ION Pathfinder 280 at $199.99 for a boombox speaker instead.
