The Devialet Mania is the battery-powered, tougher pick. A compact, good looking Wi-Fi and Bluetooth stereo speaker with Alexa built in and splash resistance. Its battery is rated for 10 hours, while the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen needs an outlet. It is rated IPX4, while the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen has no water resistance. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen lacks. The tradeoff: Not very loud.
What the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen does well: A tiny Google Assistant speaker that responds quickly, raises its volume over background noise and has a mic mute switch. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Devialet Mania lacks. It links with other speakers (Wi-Fi multi-room, Chromecast built-in), which the Devialet Mania cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Devialet Mania lacks. The tradeoff: Digital Trends’ main complaint was that maximum volume could be louder, and RTINGS’ independent review agrees, naming it their one real weakness.
One note: the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen is discontinued and no longer widely available new. The Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen’s replacement, the Google Home Speaker, is still sold new.
Buy the Devialet Mania ($899) for a large speaker; the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen ($119) suits a powered desktop speaker instead.
