These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The Devialet Mania ranks #54 of 117 large speakers by sound quality at $899; the Google Nest Audio ranks #9 of 15 powered desktop speakers by sound quality at $99.99.
The Devialet Mania is the battery-powered, tougher pick. A compact, good looking Wi-Fi and Bluetooth stereo speaker with Alexa built in and splash resistance. Its battery is rated for 10 hours, while the Google Nest Audio needs an outlet. It is rated IPX4, while the Google Nest Audio has no water resistance. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Google Nest Audio lacks. The tradeoff: Not very loud.
The case for the Google Nest Audio: An affordable Google Assistant speaker with Chromecast casting and respectable bass from one small box. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Devialet Mania lacks. It links with other speakers (Wi-Fi multi-room, Chromecast built-in), which the Devialet Mania cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Devialet Mania lacks. The catch: Each unit is mono; a genuine left-right stereo pair means buying two and pairing them over Wi-Fi.
One note: the Google Nest Audio is no longer in production and isn’t widely stocked new anymore. The Google Nest Audio’s replacement, the Google Home Speaker, is still sold new.
Buy the Devialet Mania at $899 if you want a large speaker. Buy the Google Nest Audio at $99.99 if you want a powered desktop speaker instead.
