These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The CMF Speaker S ranks #25 of 62 small speakers by sound quality at $49; the CMF Speaker M ranks #87 of 176 medium speakers by sound quality at $89.
The CMF Speaker S is the lighter pick. A compact, IP68 waterproof speaker with a solid feel, real physical controls, and an 18 hour battery that held up in testing at about 17 hours at half volume. At 0.7 lbs (334 g) it weighs much less than the CMF Speaker M at 1.3 lbs (602 g). The catch: A single 10W driver limits bass impact and volume, so it suits a desk, bedroom, or close range listening outside rather than filling a larger room.
What the CMF Speaker M does well: A two way design with a 70mm woofer and 16mm tweeter on 35W, giving crisp treble, detailed vocals, and a fairly neutral tuning on most music. The catch: Struggles with dense rock and metal at volume, where the low end gets muddy and vocals turn shrill even with Ultra Bass on.
Buy the CMF Speaker S ($49) for a small speaker; the CMF Speaker M ($89) suits a medium speaker instead.
