Short answer: the MoFi SourcePoint 10. It ranks #27 of 222 bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 4.4/5, at $3,795. The Philharmonic BMR Monitor ranks #134, rated 3.6/5, at $2,200, $1,595 cheaper, which does not close the gap in sound quality.
The Philharmonic BMR Monitor is the more accurate, deeper-bass choice. Three-way bookshelf speakers with premium drivers, a well-built cabinet and extremely wide dispersion for a broad soundstage. Its measured preference score, a predictor of how neutral it sounds, is 6.02 against 4.16 for the MoFi SourcePoint 10. Its bass reaches about 47Hz before falling 3dB, against 56Hz for the MoFi SourcePoint 10. The tradeoff: A 1-2dB bump around 2-3kHz creates a “glare” on vocals, guitars, and strings that the reviewer noticed consistently across many tracks.
The MoFi SourcePoint 10 is the better-sounding option. A large bookshelf speaker with a 10 inch concentric driver that acts like a point source, with a huge soundstage and strong, clean dynamics. Watch for: Like virtually all coincident designs, sounds notably bright pointed directly on-axis due to a deliberate treble lift (meant to compensate for the 28mm tweeter’s earlier beaming versus a typical 25mm/1” tweeter) combined with a diffraction dip/peak from the waveguide edge; needs about 15° of toe-out to sound neutral, and even then benefits from an extra 1-2dB of treble EQ.
Buy the MoFi SourcePoint 10. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $1,595 saving on the Philharmonic BMR Monitor is not enough to make up the difference.
