What the MoFi SourcePoint 10 does well: A large bookshelf speaker with a 10 inch concentric driver that acts like a point source, with a huge soundstage and strong, clean dynamics. The tradeoff: Like virtually all coincident designs, sounds notably bright pointed directly on-axis due to a deliberate treble lift (meant to compensate for the 28mm tweeter’s earlier beaming versus a typical 25mm/1” tweeter) combined with a diffraction dip/peak from the waveguide edge; needs about 15° of toe-out to sound neutral, and even then benefits from an extra 1-2dB of treble EQ.
The Philharmonic BMR (v1) is the more accurate choice. A large three way bookshelf speaker with a ribbon tweeter, flat response, broad coverage, and an unusually expansive midrange. Its measured preference score, a predictor of how neutral it sounds, is 4.86 against 4.16 for the MoFi SourcePoint 10. The tradeoff: The measured 83dB sensitivity and roughly 4-ohm load demand meaningful external amplification.
Buy the MoFi SourcePoint 10. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the Philharmonic BMR (v1) is discontinued.
