Short answer: the Sonos Play, if you are buying new. The Minirig 3 ranks higher than it (#8 vs #59 of 164 medium speakers, 4.3/5 vs 3.5/5) but is discontinued, so only consider it used; the Sonos Play is still sold new at $299.
The Minirig 3 is the better-sounding, lighter choice. Modular, can easily attach a subwoofer. At 1.2 lbs (550 g) it weighs much less than the Sonos Play at 2.9 lbs (1.3 kg). It supports aptX Bluetooth, which the Sonos Play lacks. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Sonos Play lacks. The tradeoff: Calls itself splash resistant and has no official water rating.
The Sonos Play is the tougher pick. Genuinely wide, clean stereo dispersion off-axis thanks to the two angled tweeters, holding up from the side far better than most portables. It is rated IP67 against Splash resistant for the Minirig 3. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the Minirig 3. The tradeoff: Bass distorts noticeably on bass-heavy tracks at default settings, and the distortion persists even after enabling Trueplay tuning and manually pulling bass back in the app.
Buy the Sonos Play, since the Minirig 3 is discontinued and only worth hunting down used.

Minirig 3: $140 Discontinued eBay
Newer model: the Minirig 4, ranked higher, rated 4.3/5.
Pros: Modular, can easily attach a subwoofer. Measured bass extension of 53Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Not stereo. Calls itself splash resistant and has no official water rating. App is buggy. Wireless TWS pairing is buggy. A bit expensive. Has reliability issues more often than any other speaker. Discontinued; Minirig now sells only the Minirig 4, and the old product page redirects to it.

Sonos Play: $299.00 Amazon eBay
Pros: Genuinely wide, clean stereo dispersion off-axis thanks to the two angled tweeters, holding up from the side far better than most portables. Loudness processing keeps it sounding full-bodied at low volume. 24-hour user-replaceable battery with an included wireless charging base, IP67 waterproof and dustproof, and full Sonos WiFi multi-room with AirPlay 2 on top of Bluetooth 5.3.
Cons: Bass distorts noticeably on bass-heavy tracks at default settings, and the distortion persists even after enabling Trueplay tuning and manually pulling bass back in the app. Sounds boxy and short on clarity next to cheaper competitors.
