The core product hasn’t changed much. Both are modular, built to accept an add-on subwoofer, and share the same 4.3 rating. The 4’s real addition is USB-C charging, replacing whatever the 3 shipped with, plus a new trick where it adjusts its sound depending on whether it’s sitting upright or lying flat.
The complaints are identical, word for word. Our notes list the same issues on both: no official water rating despite being marketed as splash resistant, a buggy app, unreliable TWS pairing, and reliability issues more often than any other speaker we track. Whatever generation you buy, go in with that expectation.
The modular subwoofer system is the actual reason to choose this brand over a sealed alternative, and it carries over unchanged between generations.
Buy the Minirig 4 for USB-C charging and the newer orientation trick at a reasonable premium. Buy the Minirig 3 used if you find one meaningfully cheaper and don’t mind the older charging port.
