Short answer: the Xtreme 3, and its own pros make the case against the newer model. It ranks #18 of 76 large speakers at $269.95; the Xtreme 4 ranks #36 at $380, $110 more, despite being the newer generation.
The Xtreme 3’s own review says it plainly: more balanced sounding than the Xtreme 4. It also improved on the Xtreme 2 before it in both treble and bass extension, so it isn’t just cheaper by accident.
The Xtreme 4’s real addition is a removable battery, meaning it can outlive its cells the way the sealed Xtreme 3 can’t. Its own cons describe a dip from the upper bass into the midrange that can’t be EQ’d out, on top of some upper mids and treble boost at high levels.
Buy the Xtreme 3 for the better-measured, cheaper speaker. Buy the Xtreme 4 only if the removable battery specifically matters enough to accept the tuning step back.
