Short answer: the Xtreme 3, and its own pros make the case against the newer model. It ranks #18 of 120 large speakers at $269.95; the Xtreme 4 ranks #43 at $309.95, $40 more, despite being the newer generation.
The Xtreme 3’s own review says it plainly: more balanced sounding than the Xtreme 4. It also improved on the Xtreme 2 before it in both treble and bass extension, so it isn’t just cheaper by accident.
The Xtreme 4’s real addition is a removable battery, meaning it can outlive its cells the way the sealed Xtreme 3 can’t. Its own cons describe a dip from the upper bass into the midrange that can’t be EQ’d out, on top of some upper mids and treble boost at high levels.
Buy the JBL Xtreme 3. It is rated higher for sound quality than the JBL Xtreme 4 and costs less, which makes it the one to get unless you need something the other one does better.
Battery life favors the JBL Xtreme 4: rated for 24 hours against 15 hours for the JBL Xtreme 3.
