Short answer: the Xtreme 5, and it is not close. It ranks #18 of 78 large speakers against the Xtreme 3’s #2, a 16 place gap, for $70 more.
The Xtreme 5 is a different class of speaker, not a spec bump. Reviewers describe it as a fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion and a big step up from older JBL portables, reaching well below 40Hz. The Xtreme 3, by comparison, has boosted bass and its own pros and cons text says it is not as deep or as balanced as better speakers in its class. JBL’s own Alan Ross Reviews channel called the Xtreme 5 a massive upgrade over the Xtreme 4, and Joy & Oluv’Sone gave it a Best Bluetooth Speaker 2026 award.
The Xtreme 5 still needs work out of the box. Its cons note a hole in the mid-upper bass that cannot be EQ’d out, and weak default presets, meaning it needs a custom EQ to sound its best. Oluv’s own universal EQ, linked from the speaker’s page, is worth applying immediately after buying it.
What the Xtreme 5 adds:
- A removable battery and 28 hour rated runtime, nearly double the Xtreme 3’s 15 hours.
- IP68 water and dust resistance, tougher than the Xtreme 3’s IPX7.
- Auracast party mode, a 7-band EQ, and AAC/LC3 Bluetooth codecs, none of which the Xtreme 3 has.
What the Xtreme 3 keeps in its favor: it is noticeably smaller and lighter, keeps a 3.5mm aux input the Xtreme 5 dropped, and costs meaningfully less.
Buy the Xtreme 5 if sound quality is the priority. Its measured performance and reviewer consensus put it well ahead of the Xtreme 3, even accounting for the EQ work needed to unlock it.
Buy the Xtreme 3 if budget or size matters more than chasing the best sound in the class, or if you want a wired aux input for non-Bluetooth sources.

Pros: Removable battery. Quite deep bass, reaching well below 40Hz. A fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, a big step up from older JBL portables. Beats the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity. Plays clean at volume, unlike the JBL Boombox 4.
Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. A hole in the mid-upper bass which can’t be EQ’d out. Default EQ presets are weak (Signature is boring, Chill and Vocal are close to unusable) - needs the custom EQ to sound its best. Bigger and heavier than the Xtreme 4.
