The Sony SRS-XG500 is the longer-running, tougher choice. 30 hour battery life; 10-min quick-charge gives 3 hours. It is rated for 30 hours of battery against 15 for the JBL Partybox Encore Essential 2. It is rated IP66 against IPX4 for the JBL Partybox Encore Essential 2. It supports LDAC Bluetooth, which the JBL Partybox Encore Essential 2 lacks. The catch: Thuddy upper bass, not as deep bass as others.

Independent testing finds a balanced midrange, genuinely punchy low bass and enough output for a backyard gathering; its dome tweeters also improve the earlier Encore’s high-frequency behavior.
