These are built for different situations. The Encore Essential 2 is a party speaker at heart: its pros list guitar and microphone inputs for karaoke, USB playback, dynamic lighting, and a claimed 110dB maximum output, and independent testing found a balanced midrange with genuinely punchy low bass. Its cons note it’s front-facing, so sound changes noticeably to the sides and behind it, and it’s only IPX4 rated, covering splashes but not real water exposure.
The Xtreme 5 is the more portable, bass-focused option despite being pricier. Its pros describe deep bass reaching well below 40Hz with excellent off-axis dispersion and a removable battery, and at 2.9kg it’s actually lighter than the Encore Essential 2’s 6.2kg. Independent testing finds a balanced midrange, genuinely punchy low bass and enough output for a backyard gathering; its dome tweeters also improve the earlier Encore’s high-frequency behavior.
Cons: It is front-facing, so the sound changes noticeably to the sides and behind it, and bass compression reduces kick-drum impact at maximum volume. Bluetooth latency can cause lip-sync issues, its IPX4 rating only covers splashes, and it omits the wireless microphones bundled with the non-Essential Encore 2.

Pros: Removable battery. Quite deep bass, reaching well below 40Hz. A fantastic sounding speaker with excellent off-axis dispersion, a big step up from older JBL portables. Beats the Soundcore Boom 2 and Tribit Stormbox Blast on bass depth and clarity. Plays clean at volume, unlike the JBL Boombox 4.
Cons: High priced. Some bass boost. A hole in the mid-upper bass which can’t be EQ’d out. Default EQ presets are weak (Signature is boring, Chill and Vocal are close to unusable) - needs the custom EQ to sound its best. Bigger and heavier than the Xtreme 4.
