JBL Flip 7 vs Sony XB23

Last updated: August 21, 2026

Short answer: the JBL Flip 7 for better sound quality, the Sony XB23 for the lower price. The JBL Flip 7 ranks #14 of 136 medium speakers at $129.95. The Sony XB23 ranks #64 at $100, $29.95 cheaper.

What the JBL Flip 7 offers: A very neutral speaker, very small, almost pocket size. Just slightly more treble than the Flip 6 which was already a great speaker. The catch: A little bit of a bump at 4khz, not quite as neutral as the FLip 6. I believe this one is slightly worse than the Flip 6.

What the Sony XB23 gets right: Reasonably neutral. IP67 rated with a strap hook for backpacks. USB-C charging; up to 12 hour battery life. Watch for: Bass drops off a ton at high levels. Reduces its own volume over time when turned to max.

Buy the JBL Flip 7 if sound quality matters more than the price. Buy the Sony XB23 if the price matters more than sound quality.

If water resistance matters to you, the JBL Flip 7 at IP68 (extended submersion) holds up far better than the Sony XB23 at IPX4 (splashing).
