The Flip 7 is a genuinely neutral speaker. Its pros describe it as very neutral and small, almost pocket size, with slightly deeper bass and just a bit more treble than the well-regarded Flip 6. The only knock is a small bump at 4kHz that keeps it from being quite as flat as its predecessor.
The ULT Field 3 has a real design conflict in its sound tuning. Its cons note it sounds a bit hollow and boosted in the treble, and that the custom EQ and the ULT bass-boost button cannot be used together, turning on ULT disables the EQ, while bass is very weak with ULT off. Reviewer GYMCADDY pitted it directly against the JBL Charge 6 and the ULT Field 3 lost despite being the larger speaker.
What the ULT Field 3 offers in return: a built-in microphone, Party Connect for linking up to 100 speakers, stereo pairing, and a USB-C power bank function, none of which the Flip 7 has. It also runs longer on a charge, rated for 24 hours against the Flip 7’s 14.
Buy the JBL Flip 7. It is rated higher for sound quality than the Sony ULT Field 3 and costs less, so only choose the other one for a particular feature it does better.
