The JBL Flip 6 is the better-sounding, lighter pick. A very neutral speaker, very small, almost pocket size, a huge sound quality leap over the JBL Flip 5. At 1.2 lbs (544 g) it weighs noticeably less than the JBL Charge Essential at 1.7 lbs (770 g). It has an adjustable EQ, which the JBL Charge Essential lacks. It charges over USB-C rather than Micro USB. The catch: Some slight upper mids emphasis.
The JBL Charge Essential is the longer-running choice. Doubles as a power bank. It is rated for 20 hours of battery against 12 for the JBL Flip 6. The catch: Less clarity than the JBL Flip 4, highs rolled off.
Buy the JBL Flip 6. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the JBL Charge Essential is discontinued.

Cons: Not stereo. Some slight upper mids emphasis. The TL version (made in Vietnam) tweeter can sound somewhat scratchy and doesn’t sound as good as the GG version (made in China)
