Short answer: the JBL Clip 5 for an inexpensive current speaker that can travel anywhere. It ranks #21 of 47 small portable speakers at $59.99, while the discontinued Beoplay P2 ranks #16 at $170. The P2 had impressive bass for its tiny size, but the Clip 5 is the sensible purchase for a new portable speaker.
The Clip 5 is designed around attachment and durability. Its integrated carabiner is wider than the prior model’s, the padded back improves everyday carry, and IP67 protection makes it much safer around water and dust. JBL’s Portable app adds custom EQ, and Auracast enables multi-speaker playback. Its sound is largely unchanged from the Clip 4, so these are convenience upgrades rather than a major audio leap.
The P2 remains a polished older mini speaker. It is only 275 g, uses a 51mm full-range driver and 19mm tweeter, and can produce unusually solid bass without falling apart at volume. Gesture controls and app EQ are neat extras, but its 10-hour claimed battery, lack of an IP rating, and discontinued status make it difficult to recommend over a current model.
What the B&O Beoplay P2 gets right: Surprisingly strong bass output for its size without distorting at volume. The catch: Good for its time, but now beat out by many others.
