Pros: Apple’s second generation HomePod mini keeps the compact acoustic design of the Apple HomePod Mini, a full-range driver with dual passive radiators and a waveguide for 360 degree sound, and adds a newer chip for real-time computational tuning. Wi-Fi 6E replaces the original’s Wi-Fi 4, Thread and Ultra Wideband are built in for smart home control and handoff from an iPhone, and up to four can act as a surround system with an Apple TV 4K. It also listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and has temperature and humidity sensors for home automations.
Cons: No independent measurements yet, so its tonal balance and directivity can’t be compared directly with measured speakers; the rating is estimated from its measured predecessor. It uses the same driver and passive radiators as the Apple HomePod Mini, so expect the same limited deep bass and output suited to a small room. Audio arrives only over AirPlay with no Bluetooth streaming or aux input, setup needs an iPhone or iPad, and there is no battery or IP rating. Apple’s new Siri AI features arrive in a later software update.
