Same family: the Martin Audio CDD-LIVE 8 (smallest powered model, ranked higher, estimated 3.4/5), the Martin Audio CDD-LIVE 12 (powered model, estimated 3.1/5), the Martin Audio CDD-LIVE 15 (largest powered model, estimated 3.5/5), the Martin Audio CDD5 (smaller passive model, estimated 3/5), the Martin Audio CDD6 (smaller passive model, estimated 3.1/5), the Martin Audio CDD10 (larger passive model, rated 3.1/5), the Martin Audio CDD12 (larger passive model, rated 2.9/5) and the Martin Audio CDD15 (larger passive model, rated 3.3/5).

Pros: An ultra compact passive 8 inch coaxial speaker for on wall installations with consistent coverage. Medium-quality vendor data shows a 4.1 ideal-subwoofer preference score. The coaxial Differential Dispersion driver gives point-source summation of the LF and HF sections for consistent coverage, and the ultra-compact enclosure mounts horizontally or vertically for on-wall installation use. Measured bass extension of 128Hz (-3dB).

Cons: Being passive, it needs an external amplifier and crossover, and its compact on-wall design targets installed foreground music over full PA main duty.

Frequency Response

How the Martin Audio CDD8 measures across the audible range. A flatter listening window (the sound arriving straight at you) is more neutral: peaks sound forward or harsh, dips sound recessed. The estimated in-room response adds what a typical room does, and there a gentle, even tilt down toward the treble is ideal. Both curves are shifted so their 300 Hz to 3 kHz average sits at 0 dB.

EQ for a Neutral Response

Flattens the measured listening window from the Martin Audio CDD8's own bass extension up to 16 kHz. Set a preamp of -3.2 dB, then add these filters to any parametric equalizer in the signal path: the speaker's app or DSP if it has parametric EQ, a miniDSP, Equalizer APO or Wavelet. Boosts are kept to 3 dB, and EQ cannot fix how evenly the speaker spreads sound off-axis, which is why some speakers gain more than others. Predicted preference score with this EQ: 1.4, up from 1.1 (4.5 with an ideal subwoofer, up from 4.1). Calculated by Speaker Ranking from the spinorama measurements above.
