#421 FiiO FX15: $699.99 Amazon $699.99 eBay
Pros: Its hybrid of one 10mm dynamic driver, one balanced armature and four electrostatic tweeters delivers a warm, gently V-shaped sound with a preference score of 72 across seven hobbyist measurements. Sub-bass holds near target down to 20 Hz and bass sits about 3 dB above it, giving kick drums real punch. At 24 ohms and 103 dB/mW it runs comfortably from a phone dongle, and each earpiece weighs only 6 g.
Cons: A 7.4 dB peak near 8.1 kHz next to a 4.8 dB dip near 6.1 kHz makes cymbals and sibilants uneven, with some edge on bright tracks. The extra 2 dB in the low mids thickens vocals slightly. The DUNU Zen costs about the same and is rated higher.
