The case for the Ultimate Ears Megaboom 4: A tough waterproof speaker that floats, with USB-C charging, a long battery and PartyUp linking. It links with other speakers (PartyUp up to 50 speakers), which the Sonos Play cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Sonos Play lacks. Watch for: A lot of distortion at higher volumes.
The Sonos Play is the better-sounding option. A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth portable with wide stereo sound, a long lasting swappable battery, waterproofing and full Sonos multiroom support. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Ultimate Ears Megaboom 4 lacks. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the Ultimate Ears Megaboom 4. The tradeoff: Bass distorts noticeably on bass-heavy tracks at default settings, and the distortion persists even after enabling Trueplay tuning and manually pulling bass back in the app.
Buy the Sonos Play. It is rated higher for sound quality, and saving $99 with the Ultimate Ears Megaboom 4 does not make up for the sound-quality gap.
