Short answer: the Tribit, if you can still find one new. It ranks #22 out of 157 against the Ranger’s #60, and it costs $170.01 less than the Ranger’s $250.
The Ranger’s own cons admit the tradeoff. Its notes describe the bass as thuddy and not as deep as higher ranked speakers, and call it overpriced. The Tribit’s pros, by contrast, say that in Xbass mode it reaches its flattest frequency response, with sound identical to the Thunderbox Plus and the newer Maxsound Plus V2. Its only sound knock is slightly less deep bass than the best in its category, a smaller gap than what the Ranger is criticized for.
What the Ranger adds:
- Magnets for attaching it to metal gear or surfaces, something the Tribit does not offer.
- A USB-C power bank output, useful for charging a phone in the field.
- A tougher shell: the pros call it quite tough, though that toughness also makes it heavier for its size.
What the Tribit gives up: true wireless stereo pairing between two units, a feature the newer Maxsound Plus V2 added back.
Buy the Ranger if you want a speaker still sold new, with a rugged shell, magnetic mounting, and a power bank feature the Tribit lacks.
Buy the Tribit Maxsound Plus, or hunt down its direct successor the Maxsound Plus V2, if flatter, better rated sound at a fraction of the price matters more than buying something currently in production.
There is a real battery-life gap here: the Tribit Maxsound Plus is rated for 20 hours, the Turtlebox Ranger only 12 hours.

The Two Speakers In Full
Turtlebox Ranger: $250.00 Amazon eBay
Pros: Smoother frequency response than the other Turtlebox speakers. Has magnets for attaching it to things. Appears to be quite tough
Cons: Bass sounds kind of thuddy and isn’t as deep as higher ranked speakers. Overpriced. Heavy for the size, likely due to the toughness
