Turtlebox Gen 2 vs Turtlebox Grande

Last updated: August 11, 2026

Short answer: the Turtlebox Grande for better sound quality, the Turtlebox Gen 2 for the lower price. The Turtlebox Grande ranks #53 of 72 boombox speakers at $730. The Turtlebox Gen 2 ranks #68 at $400, $330 cheaper.

What the Turtlebox Gen 2 gets right: A recognizable rugged design. The catch: it ranks near the bottom of the boombox class here.

On the Turtlebox Grande side: A bigger 158Wh battery for about three days of playback, plus an IP67 submersible shell. The tradeoff: our notes say Turtlebox’s specs (including the claimed 126dB) don’t hold up in independent sound samples, there’s barely any bass for a 10-inch woofer, and it’s overpriced for what it delivers.

Buy the Turtlebox Gen 2 if the price matters more than sound quality. Buy the Turtlebox Grande if sound quality matters more than the price.

If sound quality matters at all to you, skip the Turtlebox Gen 2. It ranks near the bottom of the 72 boombox speakers, so look higher up the list instead.

Turtlebox Gen 2: $400 Discontinued

Turtlebox Gen 2 ranking card

Pros: Waterproof and crushproof, loud with punchy bass. 25 hour battery life (6 hours at full volume; 3 hour charge time). USB-C charging and USB-C output charges other devices, an upgrade over the original’s AC power brick. Pairs with a second unit for stereo.

Cons: Sounds basically identical to the original and the Gen 3: each generation mainly added features, not sound quality. They pretty much lie about all their specs and sound horrible in all youtube sound samples. Only 50w (from their indigogo page), will never hit 120db at a reasonable measuring distance. Putting your db meter right against the speaker doesn’t count, 1 meter distance is the standard. Barely any bass. Rattles at high volume. Looking at it, it appears to be a generic car 2-way 6x9 speaker in a plastic box. Discontinued.

Pros: Insanely loud at 126dB with a 10-inch woofer. IP67 submersible shell with crush-proof ABS exterior. 158Wh battery provides ~3 days of playback. Bluetooth 5.4, party mode (100+ speakers).

Cons: They pretty much lie about all their specs and sound just okay in all youtube sound samples. Only 100w will never hit 126db at a reasonable measuring distance. Putting your db meter right against the speaker doesn’t count, 1 meter distance is the standard. Barely any bass for a 10” woofer. Overpriced and not worth it.
