It ranks #2 of 98 boombox speakers by sound quality (rated 4.5/5) at $179.99 and is still sold new; the Sony SRS-XG500 ranks #65 (rated 3.0/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The Sony SRS-XG500’s replacement, the Sony ULT Field 7, is rated 3.2/5 at $448.99.
The Tribit Stormbox Blast is the better-sounding, deeper-bass choice. Amazing speaker given its size, competes well with some speakers in the Party size class, bass almost as deep as a JBL Partybox 100. Its bass reaches about 43Hz before falling 10dB, against 49Hz for the Sony SRS-XG500. The tradeoff: Lacks a bit of detail compared to the top ranked speakers in other size categories, dip at 5.5kHz.
What the Sony SRS-XG500 does well: 30 hour battery life; 10-min quick-charge gives 3 hours. It supports LDAC Bluetooth, which the Tribit Stormbox Blast lacks. It links with other speakers (Party Connect up to 100 speakers), which the Tribit Stormbox Blast cannot. The catch: Thuddy upper bass, not as deep bass as others.
Buy the Tribit Stormbox Blast. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the Sony SRS-XG500 is discontinued.

Same family: the Tribit Stormbox Micro 2 (smaller model, rated 4.5/5), the Tribit Stormbox Flow (smaller model, rated 3.5/5) and the Tribit Stormbox Pro (smaller model, rated 3.7/5).
Pros: Amazing speaker given its size, competes well with some speakers in the Party size class, bass almost as deep as a JBL Partybox 100. Quite neutral in the default and xbass modes, but try Oluv’s EQ or Alan Ross’s EQ for a slightly more neutral sound. Oluv has mentioned v3.5 now uses his EQ as the defaults and sounds extremely good. 2 different light modes or can be turned off. Measured bass extension of 43Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Lacks a bit of detail compared to the top ranked speakers in other size categories, dip at 5.5kHz. Without the above EQ this speaker would rank around #4 in the rankings. The curved underside of the handle makes it a little harder to grip and can be uncomfortable to carry long distances.
