The Sovox MiniMax3 is the more accurate pick. A tiny aluminum coaxial monitor with a wide sweet spot, deep bass for its size and placement presets for desk or wall. Its measured preference score, a predictor of how neutral it sounds, is 3.84 against 2.89 for the Kanto YU4. The tradeoff: Output tops out around 86dB, with heavy compression and very high distortion as it gets there, so it only suits nearfield listening at modest volume.
What the Kanto YU4 does well: A compact powered pair with phono, optical and Bluetooth inputs, a remote and a subwoofer output. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Sovox MiniMax3 lacks. Watch for: Standalone preference is only 2.89, with a -3dB point around 86Hz and a 4.2dB midrange response span.
Buy the Sovox MiniMax3. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the Kanto YU4 is discontinued.
