The Sonos Play is the better-sounding, tougher pick. A Wi-Fi and Bluetooth portable with wide stereo sound, a long lasting swappable battery, waterproofing and full Sonos multiroom support. It is rated IP67 against IPX5 for the Sony SRS-XB30. It charges over USB-C rather than Micro USB. The tradeoff: Bass distorts noticeably on bass-heavy tracks at default settings, and the distortion persists even after enabling Trueplay tuning and manually pulling bass back in the app.
The Sony SRS-XB30 is the lighter pick. A splash resistant Sony speaker with LDAC, a power bank output, a long rated battery and Party Chain linking, now discontinued. At 2.2 lbs (1 kg) it weighs noticeably less than the Sonos Play at 2.9 lbs (1.3 kg). It supports LDAC Bluetooth, which the Sonos Play lacks. It links with other speakers (Partychain up to 100 speakers), which the Sonos Play cannot. Watch for: Independent lab listening rates music fidelity only fair: bass has impact but is boomy and lacks the deepest notes, while the midrange can sound hazy, muffled and grainy.
Buy the Sonos Play. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the Sony SRS-XB30 is discontinued, so it is only available used.
