Short answer: the MoFi SourcePoint 8 if sound quality matters most, the Polk Signature Elite ES20 if price matters most. The MoFi SourcePoint 8 ranks #17 of 222 bookshelf speakers, rated 4.5/5, at $2,594. The Polk Signature Elite ES20 ranks #119, rated 3.7/5, at $398.98, $2,195.02 cheaper.
What the Polk Signature Elite ES20 does well: Large, efficient bookshelf speakers with unusually deep bass for the price and wide horizontal coverage. Watch for: Predicted in-room smoothness of 0.238 and directivity-index consistency of 3.81 are average rather than class-leading.
The MoFi SourcePoint 8 is the more accurate choice. A bookshelf speaker with an 8 inch concentric driver, neutral sound, excellent imaging, and wide dispersion that forgives placement. Its measured preference score, a predictor of how neutral it sounds, is 5.15 against 4.49 for the Polk Signature Elite ES20. The catch: Like other coincident designs, produces diffraction dips around 4kHz and 7kHz when pointed directly on-axis; needs about 10-15° of toe-out to smooth those out.
Buy the Polk Signature Elite ES20 when the price outweighs sound quality for you, and the MoFi SourcePoint 8 when sound quality outweighs the price instead.
