Short answer: the Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt. It ranks #46 of 73 subwoofers by sound quality (rated 3.2/5) at $224.99 and is still sold new; the Wharfedale DX-1 ranks #61 (rated 2.9/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used.
The Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt is the better-sounding option. A low cost ported 8 inch subwoofer with a 200 watt amp, an easy entry point for a first subwoofer. The catch: Very compact 18.5 lbs (8.4 kg) size, limited 106.4 dB output, ported room interaction, and entry-level build.
Why pick the Wharfedale DX-1: A compact rear ported 8 inch subwoofer that adds bass support without the bulk of a full size cabinet. The tradeoff: Without a published 20 Hz output result, deep-bass capability is less certain than its midbass figure.
Buy the Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the Wharfedale DX-1 is discontinued, so it is only available used.
