Short answer: the Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt. It ranks #46 of 73 subwoofers by sound quality, rated 3.2/5, at $224.99; the JL Audio Dominion d108 ranks #58, rated 2.9/5, and costs $1,000, which makes this an easy call rather than a real tradeoff.
The Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt is the better-sounding choice. A low cost ported 8 inch subwoofer with a 200 watt amp, an easy entry point for a first subwoofer. The tradeoff: Very compact 18.5 lbs (8.4 kg) size, limited 106.4 dB output, ported room interaction, and entry-level build.
Why pick the JL Audio Dominion d108: A compact sealed 8 inch subwoofer under 30 cm tall that adds upper bass support to a modest room. Watch for: Deep-bass output is limited relative to its midbass result, so it is not the right choice for the lowest movie effects.
Buy the Monoprice Premium Select 8in 200-Watt. It is rated higher for sound quality than the JL Audio Dominion d108 and costs less, which makes it the one to get unless you need something the other one does better.
