Short answer: the V10 Master Edition if budget allows, the 888 if it doesn’t. The V10 Master Edition ranks #8 of 228 large floorstanding speakers against the 888’s #4, and it costs $2,500 more.
Both are exceptional by Erin’s Audio Corner’s measurements, and the reviewer ranks them almost back to back. The 888 is described as among the reviewer’s personal top three speakers out of roughly 200 tested, alongside the KEF Blade 2 Meta and Dutch & Dutch 8C, despite costing a fraction of either. The V10 Master Edition, a newer Andrew Jones design, ranks as the reviewer’s personal second choice behind only the KEF Blade 2 Meta, ahead of the Dutch & Dutch 8C, JBL 4367, and JBL M2. In measured performance, the two are close: the 888 shows excellent compression and dynamic-range linearity and on-axis/30-degree-off-axis tracking within about 1 to 1.5dB above 500Hz, meaning its tonal balance barely shifts with listening position.
Bass extension and cabinet size are the clearest physical differences. The V10 Master Edition reaches slightly deeper at -10dB (25Hz versus 26Hz) but the 888 actually holds on further at -3dB (34Hz versus 38Hz for the V10). The V10 Master Edition is also dramatically larger and heavier at roughly 161 lbs (73 kg) against the 888’s roughly 95 lbs (43.1 kg) per speaker, and uses a passive-radiator woofer cabinet with three-way treble attenuation switches for room tuning, while the 888 is ported.
The 888 is pickier about placement, the V10 Master Edition is pickier about amplification. Our notes say the 888 needs about two feet of rear wall clearance, with boominess if placed closer and lost extension if placed farther, and loses top-end energy if toed out more than about 10 degrees. The V10 Master Edition’s lower sensitivity, about 89dB against the 888’s roughly 86dB, means it demands more amplifier power to reach the same volume.
Buy the 888 if you want nearly the same caliber of measured performance for $2,500 less, and have the floor space for careful placement.
Buy the V10 Master Edition if you have the budget and amplifier power to spare. Erin’s Audio Corner ranks it as close to a personal favorite as any speaker reviewed.
