Short answer: the Ultimate Ears Boom 4, if you are buying new. The Minirig 2 ranks higher than it (#9 vs #110 of 164 medium speakers, 4.3/5 vs 2.9/5) but is discontinued, so only consider it used; the Ultimate Ears Boom 4 is still sold new at $149.99.
The Minirig 2 is the better-sounding, longer-running pick. Modular, can easily attach a subwoofer. It is rated for 40 hours of battery against 15 for the Ultimate Ears Boom 4. At 1.1 lbs (488 g) it weighs noticeably less than the Ultimate Ears Boom 4 at 1.4 lbs (620 g). It supports aptX Bluetooth, which the Ultimate Ears Boom 4 lacks. Watch for: Calls itself splash resistant and has no official water rating.
The Ultimate Ears Boom 4 is the tougher choice. IP67 rated, floats, and finally charges via USB-C instead of the older Booms’ Micro-USB. It is rated IP67 against Splash resistant for the Minirig 2. It plays in stereo from a single unit, unlike the Minirig 2. Watch for: Not much improvement over the old ones.
Buy the Ultimate Ears Boom 4 if you want one new; the Minirig 2 is discontinued, so only look for it used.
