Short answer: the Minirig 4, it improves on nearly everything except battery life. The Minirig 4 ranks #8 and the Minirig 2 ranks #6 out of 142 medium portable speakers, for $89.95 more.
Both speakers share Minirig’s modular design, built around the same 70mm driver format and able to attach a Minirig subwoofer for more bass. Where they differ is power and connectivity: the Minirig 4 puts out 50W against the Minirig 2’s 15W, hits 106dB max volume versus 95dB, and adds a built-in microphone and orientation-aware sound that adjusts depending on whether it’s sitting upright or lying flat. The Minirig 4 also finally moved to USB-C charging in place of the Minirig 2’s proprietary cable, and its Bluetooth latency is much lower at 60ms versus 150ms for a single Minirig 2 (500ms when two are paired in stereo).
The tradeoff is battery life: the Minirig 2 is rated for 40 hours against 30 hours for the Minirig 4. Neither speaker has an official water rating despite both being marketed as splash resistant, and both share a documented history of reliability complaints, including a buggy companion app; the Minirig 2’s TWS pairing is specifically called out as buggy as well, an issue the Minirig 4 doesn’t share in its own review.
Buy the Minirig 4 for the far higher output, USB-C charging, and built-in microphone, especially since it’s the speaker still in current production.
Buy the Minirig 2 used only if you find one substantially discounted and want the longer battery life, understanding it carries the same reliability concerns as the current model.
