Short answer: the KRK Classic 5, if you are buying new. The Kali Audio LP-8 ranks higher than it (#55 vs #47 of 65 powered bookshelf speakers, 3.9/5 vs 3.4/5) but is discontinued, so only consider it used; the KRK Classic 5 is still sold new at $319.99.
The Classic 5 is the one with real independent measurement data behind it. Audio Science Review’s Klippel testing gives it -3dB bass around 60Hz and a 5.18 preference score with an ideal subwoofer, though its own cons are candid that the native standalone score is only 2.66, with a large 6.5dB midrange span, excess treble, and crossover and directivity errors that keep it from sounding neutral out of the box. Low-bass distortion also limits how loud it can play cleanly. The LP-8’s review has no comparable measured scoring; its pros describe a large woofer, waveguide, and placement switches for affordable nearfield monitoring, while its cons flag first-generation amplifier noise that can be distracting at a quiet desk and note the cabinets need real space.
Output power favors the larger LP-8. It’s rated at 100W per speaker against the Classic 5’s 50W RMS, consistent with its bigger 8 inch woofer versus the Classic 5’s 5 inch driver. Both include the same TRS, XLR, and RCA input trio and a basic room-adjustment EQ switch, with no app or Bluetooth on either.
Buy the KRK Classic 5 if you want the speaker with actual third-party measurement data behind its ranking and don’t mind that it needs EQ work to sound its best.
Buy the Kali Audio LP-8 if you want a bigger woofer and more headroom for less money, and can live with reported amplifier noise at low listening levels.

Cons: The native standalone score is 2.66 and the midrange span is a large 6.5dB. Excess treble and crossover/directivity errors keep it from being neutral out of the box, while low-bass distortion limits loud playback. Modeled EQ scores are not stock performance and do not demonstrate corrected distortion or dispersion.
