JBL Xtreme 4 vs Marshall Emberton III

Last updated: September 26, 2026

These sit in different size classes, so this is not a straight ranking comparison. The JBL Xtreme 4 ranks #40 of 82 large speakers by sound quality at $309.95; the Marshall Emberton III ranks #104 of 144 medium speakers by sound quality at $160.03.

JBL Xtreme 4 vs Marshall Emberton III

Why pick the JBL Xtreme 4: A rugged 2.1kg portable with IP67 protection, a replaceable battery, USB-C power-bank output, Auracast, stereo pairing and a useful 5-band app EQ. The tradeoff: It cannot produce the deep rumble of a larger speaker, and bass compression increases near maximum volume.

The case for the Marshall Emberton III: 30 hour battery life - among the best in its class; a 20 min quick-charge gives 4 hours. The catch: Strange unnatural echo-like sound coloration, bass not as deep as competitors.

Buy the JBL Xtreme 4 at $309.95 for a large speaker, or the Marshall Emberton III at $160.03 for a medium speaker instead.

Newer model: the JBL Xtreme 5, rated 4.6/5.

Pros: A rugged 2.1kg portable with IP67 protection, a replaceable battery, USB-C power-bank output, Auracast, stereo pairing and a useful 5-band app EQ. Independent reviews find the midrange detailed and the sound clear, punchy and refined for outdoor use; it also reaches a strong 106dB maximum level and has excellent real-world battery life.

Cons: It cannot produce the deep rumble of a larger speaker, and bass compression increases near maximum volume. The front-facing layout has only modest off-axis consistency, Bluetooth latency is high for video, and the default balance benefits from EQ adjustment. There is no aux input, so wired sources are not supported. Out of the box it leans bass-boosted, with a dip between the upper bass and midrange that EQ cannot fix, and it pushes the upper mids and treble at high volume. It is also expensive.

Marshall Emberton III ranking card

Older model: the Marshall Emberton II (rated 2.7/5).

Pros: 30 hour battery life - among the best in its class; a 20 min quick-charge gives 4 hours. IP67 rated, durable rubbery build using 50% recycled plastic. Measured bass extension of 62Hz (-10dB).

Cons: Strange unnatural echo-like sound coloration, bass not as deep as competitors. Not technically a 360 speaker, only front and rear. Not very loud. Not really any different from the Emberton II except having the treble turned down a little bit.
