What the JBL Xtreme 4 offers: A rugged 2.1kg portable with IP67 protection, a replaceable battery, USB-C power-bank output, Auracast, stereo pairing and a useful 5-band app EQ. Independent reviews find the midrange detailed and the sound clear, punchy and refined for outdoor use; it also reaches a strong 106dB maximum level and has excellent real-world battery life. Watch for: It cannot produce the deep rumble of a larger speaker, and bass compression increases near maximum volume. The front-facing layout has only modest off-axis consistency, Bluetooth latency is high for video, and the default balance benefits from EQ adjustment. There is no aux input, so wired sources are not supported.
What the Devialet Mania offers: Small, nice looking. Watch for: Not very loud. Extremely high price. Bass boosted. Tweeters are not aimed at you and there’s a huge treble rolloff off-axis as compared to the Beoplay P6 in the comparison video. Only 10 hours of battery. Oluv didn’t like the upper mids or treble (mentioned on his Patreon)
Buy the JBL Xtreme 4. It ranks higher for sound quality than the Devialet Mania and costs less, which settles it without a real tradeoff to make.
Battery life favors the JBL Xtreme 4: rated for 24 hours against 10 hours for the Devialet Mania.
If water resistance matters to you, the JBL Xtreme 4 at IP67 (brief submersion) holds up far better than the Devialet Mania at IPX4 (splashing).
