The Encore Essential 2 sounds better. Side by side it played louder with better bass and a nicer, richer sound. The X20S was the better value, costing about half as much.

The Encore Essential 2 is well measured, with about 110dB of output, a balanced midrange and punchy low bass. It has wired mic and guitar inputs, a 7-band app EQ and Auracast.

The X20S is IPX7 against the Encore’s IPX4, with FM radio, TF and USB playback, a built-in microphone and a shoulder strap. Its rating comes from listening comparisons, not measurements.

Buy the JBL Partybox Encore Essential 2. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $108.01 saving on the W-King X20S is not enough to make up the difference.

Pros: A compact 6.2kg party speaker with 100W output, 110dB maximum level, a 15-hour claimed battery, app-based 7-band EQ, dynamic lighting, USB playback, guitar and mic inputs, and Auracast linking. Independent testing finds a balanced midrange, genuinely punchy low bass and enough output for a backyard gathering; its dome tweeters also improve the earlier Encore’s high-frequency behavior.

Cons: It is front-facing, so the sound changes noticeably to the sides and behind it, and bass compression reduces kick-drum impact at maximum volume. Bluetooth latency can cause lip-sync issues, its IPX4 rating only covers splashes, and it omits the wireless microphones bundled with the non-Essential Encore 2.

Pros: Clearer and smoother than the larger W-King X20 at about half its size and weight, and in side by side tests it held its own against the Harman Kardon Go + Play 3, with nicer, more exposed mids and more volume. 140W RMS (180W peak), IPX7, Bluetooth 5.4, a built-in microphone, TF card, USB and aux playback, FM radio, a carry handle and a shoulder strap.

Cons: Less bass and depth than the X20 and about 3dB quieter, and at maximum volume its mids and highs start to drown out the bass. With a flat EQ the bass is cut off, so it needs the bass boost. The JBL PartyBox Encore Essential 2 sounded better in a direct comparison. The evidence is listening comparisons, not measurements. Sold direct from W-King in the US.
