The Encore Essential 2 is the more balanced party speaker. Its 5.25-inch woofer reaches deep, punchy bass, down 10dB at 42Hz, and its dome tweeters give it a balanced midrange and cleaner treble than the first Encore. It adds mic and guitar inputs, a 7-band EQ and Auracast. It is front-facing and only IPX4, and it loses some kick at full volume.
The Boom 2 Plus is the lighter, tougher option. At 8.4 lbs (3.8 kg) it weighs well under the Encore’s 13.7 lbs (6.2 kg). It is rated IPX7, claims 20 hours of battery, charges over USB-C and has a carry strap. Its bass reaches about 39Hz before falling 10dB, and it gets slightly louder. But its warm tuning rolls off the treble and boosts the upper bass, so it sounds less clear without EQ.
Buy the JBL Partybox Encore Essential 2. It is rated higher for sound quality, and saving $39.01 with the Soundcore Boom 2 Plus does not make up for the sound-quality gap.

Pros: A compact 6.2kg party speaker with 100W output, 110dB maximum level, a 15-hour claimed battery, app-based 7-band EQ, dynamic lighting, USB playback, guitar and mic inputs, and Auracast linking. Independent testing finds a balanced midrange, genuinely punchy low bass and enough output for a backyard gathering; its dome tweeters also improve the earlier Encore’s high-frequency behavior. Measured bass extension of 42Hz (-10dB).
Cons: It is front-facing, so the sound changes noticeably to the sides and behind it, and bass compression reduces kick-drum impact at maximum volume. Bluetooth latency can cause lip-sync issues, its IPX4 rating only covers splashes, and it omits the wireless microphones bundled with the non-Essential JBL Partybox Encore 2.

Pros: Quite a bit lighter than most of the other boombox size speakers. This speaker will likely move up as we get a good EQ tune that makes it a lot more neutral. Measured bass extension of 39Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Warm tuning meaning a rolled off treble and some upper bass boost. Reasonably deep bass, but not as good as the top ranked.
