Short answer: the JBL Flip 6. It ranks #13 of 175 medium speakers by sound quality (rated 4.2/5) at $79.95 and is still sold new; the JBL Flip Essential ranks #90 (rated 3.2/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used. The JBL Flip Essential’s replacement, the JBL Flip Essential 3 SE, is rated 3.6/5 at $113.82.
The Flip 6 is the far better speaker and still sold new. A dedicated tweeter alongside its racetrack woofer makes it one of the most neutral speakers its size, with bass to about 56Hz before falling 10dB. It adds an app with a 3-band EQ, PartyBoost linking, AAC, IP67 protection and USB-C charging.
The Flip Essential is a discontinued budget Flip. Its main advantage is a 3.5mm aux input, which the Flip 6 dropped. Otherwise it gives up a lot: two full-range drivers that JBL rates only down to 80Hz, 16W instead of 30W, a 10-hour battery, Micro USB charging and no app, EQ or party mode.
Buy the JBL Flip 6. It is rated higher for sound quality and still sold new, while the JBL Flip Essential is discontinued.

Pros: A very neutral speaker, very small, almost pocket size, a huge sound quality leap over the JBL Flip 5. Measured bass extension of 56Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Not stereo. Some slight upper mids emphasis. The TL version (made in Vietnam) tweeter can sound somewhat scratchy and doesn’t sound as good as the GG version (made in China)

Pros: A genuinely portable 471g speaker with IPX7 water resistance, a 3.5mm aux input and 16W output from two full-range drivers. It is a simple, no-app option for wired sources, travel and casual listening where its cylindrical shape and modest size are a genuine advantage.
Cons: Bass is lighter than the JBL Flip 5 and the 80Hz claimed low-frequency limit means it cannot deliver real low-end weight. Battery life is only a claimed 10 hours, there is no speakerphone, EQ or party mode, and its older Bluetooth 4.1 platform and discontinued status make it a basic used-market choice.
