Short answer: it depends on what you actually need from a clip speaker. The Clip 5 ranks #21 of 47 small speakers at $79.95, and the Select 4 Go ranks #23 at $21.99, a $57.96 difference for barely any ranking gap.
Neither speaker is a meaningful upgrade over its own predecessor or its class. Our notes on the Clip 5 call it generally more of the same from the Clip series, basically about the same as the Clip 4, just with more features layered on. The Select 4 Go’s defining trait is being quite inexpensive for what you get, but that comes with real tradeoffs: bass that doesn’t go as deep as higher-ranked speakers, a tendency to lose sound quality before it gets very loud, and some sibilance on snare and stick transients.
What the Clip 5 actually adds over the Select 4 Go: a carabiner clip built into the body for hanging on a bag or belt loop, Auracast for pairing with other JBL speakers, an IP67 rating, and custom EQ through the JBL Portable app. Its 7W output is also higher than the Select 4 Go’s 5W.
What the Select 4 Go adds in return: a longer 20-hour battery rating against the Clip 5’s 12 hours, and Bluetooth 5.4 versus the Clip 5’s 5.3. Playback is mono on a single unit, so a true stereo pair requires buying two.
Buy the JBL Clip 5 if you want the carabiner form factor, Auracast pairing, or app-based EQ, and don’t mind paying more for them.
Buy the Soundcore Select 4 Go if you just want the cheapest workable clip speaker and can live with a duller top end and less headroom at volume.
