Short answer: the JBL Boombox 4. It ranks #20 of 89 boombox speakers by sound quality (rated 4.0/5) at $549.95 and is still sold new; the Demerbox DB2 ranks #64 (rated 2.8/5) and is discontinued, so it is only an option used.
The DB2’s case is durability and runtime, not sound. Built from a real Pelican case, it’s IP67 rated and effectively indestructible, doubles as a power bank and a waterproof dry box, and claims 40+ hours of battery (real-world closer to 14 hours if you’re also charging a phone from it). Its cons are direct: bass isn’t as deep as better speakers, and at $400 it’s considered overpriced for what it delivers sonically.
The Boombox 4 trades ruggedness for output and adjustability. It has a claimed 115dB maximum SPL for its size and a 7-band EQ, an upgrade over the Boombox 3’s 3 bands, though several reviewers note it sounds worse out of the box than the 3 until you dial in a custom EQ (Oluv’s published EQ curve is a common fix). It also drops aux input entirely, relying on Bluetooth and USB-C digital input instead. At $549.95 it costs more than the DB2.
Buy the DB2 if you need something that survives being dropped, submerged or thrown in a truck bed, and battery life outweighs outright sound quality.
Buy the Boombox 4 for higher output and more EQ control, provided you’re willing to retune it yourself.

Older models: the JBL Boombox 3 (ranked lower, rated 3.8/5), the JBL Boombox 2 (ranked lower, rated 3.5/5) and the JBL Boombox (ranked lower, rated 2.9/5).
Pros: Pretty insane output capability for the size. IP68 protection and Auracast pairing with other current JBL speakers. Measured bass extension of 41Hz (-10dB).
Cons: Pretty overpriced for the category. Better than the Boombox 3 mostly because there are more 7 EQ bands instead of just 3 and it can be better tuned. Try Oluv’s EQ for it. Out of the box sounds worse than the Boombox 3. No Aux input.
