These are not really the same size class, and that is the honest framing here. The Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen ranks #14 of 15 powered desktop speakers by sound quality at $119; the Harman Kardon Citation 200 ranks #13 of 117 large speakers by sound quality at $130.
What the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen does well: A tiny Google Assistant speaker that responds quickly, raises its volume over background noise and has a mic mute switch. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Harman Kardon Citation 200 lacks. It links with other speakers (Wi-Fi multi-room, Chromecast built-in), which the Harman Kardon Citation 200 cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Harman Kardon Citation 200 lacks. The tradeoff: Digital Trends’ main complaint was that maximum volume could be louder, and RTINGS’ independent review agrees, naming it their one real weakness.
The Harman Kardon Citation 200 is the battery-powered, tougher option. A portable smart speaker with Wi-Fi, Google Assistant and deep bass for its size, now discontinued but worth buying used. Its battery is rated for 8 hours, while the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen needs an outlet. It is rated IPX4, while the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen has no water resistance. Watch for: Overly boomy by default, you can short press the Bluetooth and volume down buttons simultaneously to decrease the bass, and the Bluetooth and volume up buttons simultaneously to increase it.
One note: the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen is discontinued and no longer widely available new. The Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen’s replacement, the Google Home Speaker, is rated 3.0/5 at $99.99.
Buy the Google Nest Mini 2nd Gen at $119 if you want a powered desktop speaker. Buy the Harman Kardon Citation 200 at $130 if you want a large speaker instead.
