What the Google Home Max does well: A large Google smart speaker with two woofers, automatic room tuning and stereo pairing, praised by owners for its bass. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Harman Kardon Citation 200 lacks. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Harman Kardon Citation 200 lacks. It links with other speakers (Wi-Fi multi-room, Chromecast built-in), which the Harman Kardon Citation 200 cannot. The catch: Discontinued by Google since 2020, so it can no longer be bought new; used and refurbished stock is what remains, and RTINGS calls its soundstage mediocre despite the driver count.
The Harman Kardon Citation 200 is the battery-powered, tougher pick. A portable smart speaker with Wi-Fi, Google Assistant and deep bass for its size, now discontinued but worth buying used. Its battery is rated for 8 hours, while the Google Home Max needs an outlet. It is rated IPX4, while the Google Home Max has no water resistance. The tradeoff: Overly boomy by default, you can short press the Bluetooth and volume down buttons simultaneously to decrease the bass, and the Bluetooth and volume up buttons simultaneously to increase it.
One note: the Google Home Max is discontinued and no longer widely available new.
Buy the Google Home Max ($399) for a powered desktop speaker; the Harman Kardon Citation 200 ($130) suits a large speaker instead.
