Short answer: the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2. It ranks #149 of 222 bookshelf speakers by sound quality, rated 3.5/5, at $329. The ELAC Debut 2.0 B5.2 ranks #92, rated 3.2/5, at $269, $60 cheaper, not enough of a saving to outweigh the sound-quality gap.
What the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2 does well: Large bookshelf speakers that play very loud with low distortion and decent bass, a solid budget choice. The catch: A good size resonant peak around 700Hz stands out from an otherwise smooth response and lingers in cumulative spectral decay (waterfall) measurements: in one reviewer’s sighted A/B test, reducing it by about 5dB via EQ made a noticeable but not dramatic difference.
Why pick the ELAC Debut 2.0 B5.2: Affordable compact bookshelf speakers with a front port for near wall placement, useful bass and a response that takes EQ well. Watch for: Erin measured a broad +3dB step beginning around 1.5kHz; the resulting elevated upper range sounds tonally uneven even though it is not a narrow, sharp resonance.
Buy the ELAC Debut 2.0 B6.2. It is rated higher for sound quality, and the $60 you would save on the ELAC Debut 2.0 B5.2 does not close the gap.
