What the B&O Beosound 2 does well: A beautifully made, compact Wi-Fi speaker with omnidirectional playback, Chromecast, AirPlay, Bluetooth with AAC/aptX, optical and aux inputs, app EQ, voice control and Beolink multiroom. It supports aptX Bluetooth, which the Sonos Play lacks. It links with other speakers (Beolink Multiroom), which the Sonos Play cannot. It has an adjustable EQ, which the Sonos Play lacks. The tradeoff: Its bass-forward balance can recess the mids, and its 94dB maximum level is modest for a speaker intended to fill larger spaces.
The Sonos Play is the battery-powered choice. Genuinely wide, clean stereo dispersion off-axis thanks to the two angled tweeters, holding up from the side far better than most portables. Its battery is rated for 24 hours, while the B&O Beosound 2 needs an outlet. The tradeoff: Bass distorts noticeably on bass-heavy tracks at default settings, and the distortion persists even after enabling Trueplay tuning and manually pulling bass back in the app.
Buy the B&O Beosound 2 at $4,000 for a powered desktop speaker, or the Sonos Play at $299 for a medium speaker instead.
