The Ascend Acoustics Sierra-LX is the more accurate choice. A compact bookshelf speaker with very neutral, flat sound, a wide soundstage, and surprisingly deep bass in a bamboo cabinet. Its measured preference score, a predictor of how neutral it sounds, is 6.63 against 5.15 for the MoFi SourcePoint 8. The catch: Very low sensitivity at about 81dB, so it needs a genuinely powerful amplifier to reach normal listening levels.
Why pick the MoFi SourcePoint 8: A bookshelf speaker with an 8 inch concentric driver, neutral sound, excellent imaging, and wide dispersion that forgives placement. The tradeoff: Like other coincident designs, produces diffraction dips around 4kHz and 7kHz when pointed directly on-axis; needs about 10-15° of toe-out to smooth those out.
Buy the MoFi SourcePoint 8. It is rated higher for sound quality, and saving $996 with the Ascend Acoustics Sierra-LX does not make up for the sound-quality gap.
