It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Sonos Play lacks. It links with other speakers (Wi-Fi multi-room, Alexa), which the Sonos Play cannot. Watch for: PCWorld’s earlier review was blunt: despite a larger 1.95-inch driver on paper, it sounded flat and tinny with only a hint of bass next to the smaller-driver Echo Dot, and called the value proposition a hard no; RTINGS’ more recent test agrees on the underlying tradeoff, noting it can’t reproduce as much low bass as the Amazon Echo Dot Max and doesn’t get very loud.
The Sonos Play is the battery-powered, tougher choice. Genuinely wide, clean stereo dispersion off-axis thanks to the two angled tweeters, holding up from the side far better than most portables. Its battery is rated for 24 hours, while the Amazon Echo Pop needs an outlet. It is rated IP67, while the Amazon Echo Pop has no water resistance. It keeps a wired aux input, which the Amazon Echo Pop lacks. Watch for: Bass distorts noticeably on bass-heavy tracks at default settings, and the distortion persists even after enabling Trueplay tuning and manually pulling bass back in the app.
Buy the Amazon Echo Pop at $45.98 if you want a powered desktop speaker. Buy the Sonos Play at $299 if you want a medium speaker instead.
