The case for the Amazon Echo Pop: A compact 0.4 lbs (195 g) half-sphere Alexa smart speaker with strong voice pickup, a mic mute button and Matter and Sidewalk smart home support. It supports AAC Bluetooth, which the Harman Kardon Citation 200 lacks. It links with other speakers (Wi-Fi multi-room, Alexa), which the Harman Kardon Citation 200 cannot. The catch: PCWorld’s earlier review was blunt: despite a larger 1.95-inch driver on paper, it sounded flat and tinny with only a hint of bass next to the smaller-driver Echo Dot, and called the value proposition a hard no; RTINGS’ more recent test agrees on the underlying tradeoff, noting it can’t reproduce as much low bass as the Amazon Echo Dot Max and doesn’t get very loud.
The Harman Kardon Citation 200 is the battery-powered, tougher pick. A 6.3 lbs (2.85 kg) portable smart speaker with Wi-Fi, Google Assistant, IPX4 protection, an 8-hour rated battery and deeper bass than any Onyx. Its battery is rated for 8 hours, while the Amazon Echo Pop needs an outlet. It is rated IPX4, while the Amazon Echo Pop has no water resistance. The catch: Overly boomy by default, you can short press the Bluetooth and volume down buttons simultaneously to decrease the bass, and the Bluetooth and volume up buttons simultaneously to increase it.
One note: the Harman Kardon Citation 200 is discontinued, but it still ranks #13 of 105 large speakers by sound quality, ahead of most of what is still sold new, so it is worth considering used.
Buy the Amazon Echo Pop at $45.98 if you want a powered desktop speaker. Buy the Harman Kardon Citation 200 at $130 if you want a large speaker instead.
