#51 Wharfedale Denton 80th Anniversary: $599/pair Wharfedale USA eBay
Pros: Handsome real-wood cabinetry and a relaxed compact-speaker format are backed by useful 55Hz measured extension. Its local Spinorama score improves from 2.48 to 5.00 with a subwoofer, and the broad dispersion is friendly to more than one listener.
Cons: Response smoothness and directivity consistency are only average, limiting how completely EQ can correct it. At 86dB specified sensitivity it also needs more amplifier power than its vintage appearance may suggest, and deeper bass still benefits from a subwoofer.
How it compares: Just above it: Micca MB42X Mark III - $509 cheaper, 1Hz lower bass extension (-3dB). Just below it: XSA Labs Vanguard - $396 more, 3Hz lower bass extension (-3dB).
