#111 Selah Audio RC3R: $1,300 per pair Discontinued eBay
Pros: A 3-way design with an ATD LeRibbon tweeter, a Morel MDM-55 soft dome midrange and a Scan-Speak 18W8545 woofer, the same premium drivers found in far costlier speakers. Audio Science Review measured a mostly smooth on-axis response and scores of 5.02 on its own and 7.56 with an ideal subwoofer, ahead of most passive speakers at its price. Measured bass extension of 79.8Hz (-3dB).
Cons: Discontinued; a custom design from around 2003 that is now only found used. The response rises toward 20 kHz, so it sounds bright, and uneven directivity (3.39 dB variation in the directivity index) makes room reflections sound different from the direct sound. Bass reaches only 79.8Hz at -3dB and about 39Hz at -10dB, so it benefits from a subwoofer, and it scores below the newer Selah Audio Integrity.

Frequency Response
How the Selah Audio RC3R measures across the audible range. A flatter listening window (the sound arriving straight at you) is more neutral: peaks sound forward or harsh, dips sound recessed. The estimated in-room response adds what a typical room does, and there a gentle, even tilt down toward the treble is ideal. Both curves are shifted so their 300 Hz to 3 kHz average sits at 0 dB.

EQ for a Neutral Response
Flattens the measured listening window from the Selah Audio RC3R's own bass extension up to 16 kHz. Set a preamp of -1.4 dB, then add these filters to any parametric equalizer in the signal path: the speaker's app or DSP if it has parametric EQ, a miniDSP, Equalizer APO or Wavelet. Boosts are kept to 3 dB, and EQ cannot fix how evenly the speaker spreads sound off-axis, which is why some speakers gain more than others. Predicted preference score with this EQ: 5.6, up from 5.0 (8.1 with an ideal subwoofer, up from 7.6). Calculated by Speaker Ranking from the spinorama measurements above.
